Popeye the Sailor Man is a cartoon and comic strip character who first appeared in 1929. Since his comic strip debut he’s appeared in comic books, television cartoons, arcade and video games, advertisements and a live action film, starring Robin Williams as Popeye. Popeye is generally depicted as a middle-aged sailor, with a squint and a unique way of speaking. He has muscular forearms and smokes a pipe. Popeye is often involved in comical and supernatural adventures all over the world, where he has to fight enemies (often his nemesis Bluto) and rescue his damsel in distress, Olive Oyl . The couple are often bickering but generally Olive Oyl is Popeye’s sweetheart and the pair have a child, Sweet Pea. Popeye has superhuman strength which helps him fight his foes, this is usually (in the latter showings) brought on by his consuming his favorite food – a can of spinach!
Popeye the Sailor Man – in the news!
The first town in Illinois we came too happen to be Popeye the Sailor Man’s hometown! I was wondering why I suddenly had the incredible urge for a spinach salad!
Submitted by Alain C. Popeye is the world’s most iconic sailor and the star of one of the most classic cartoons ever. But what you didn’t know is that Popeye the Sailor was ACTUALLY PROPAGANDA FUNDED BY THE POWERFUL SPINACH INDUSTRY!
